Thanks supe . . .

There are somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 covers of Solitaire at the moment. I haven't had a chance to listen to them all, but I know Olivor's version and I listened to Jann Arden's this week, while I was putting the article together. It's all good stuff.

By the way, if you're a Sedaka fan, I found a great site called <a href="http://www.sedaka.be/neil_sedaka_coversongs.htm" rel="nofollow">Neil Sedaka Cover Songs</a>
that has just about all the covers ever done on Neil's tunes.

There are two other worthwhile versions of Solitaire that I know of: one by American cabaret style singer Jane Oliver (from the mid 70s, but I'm not sure just what year) and a 'cover' of the Carpenters' version by Canadian singer Jann Arden (from her album of covers called Uncover Me). Arden basically tried to copy Karen Carpenter's phrasing, breathes and style as much as possible. And the arrangement is very similar to Richard Carpenter's 'Horizon' arrangment as well. Jane Oliver's take is lyrically closer to the original version delivered by Neil Sedaka (though Ms Oliver has a somewhat throatier delivery than Mr Sedaka!)

This is a new blog and I've got about 5 zillion ideas running through my head that I want to get done, all at once, and there just isn't enough time in a day. If there's anything more that you'd like to know about the song or the times or my partnership with Neil, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks

Why a brief history? I would love a more lengthy discussion, as I found your comments fascinating. I enjoy reading the story behind a song, and "Solitaire" is an especially interesting one. I listened to all of them and marveled at the different styles. Some I liked better than others, but I must say that Clay Aiken's version is magnificent. What a glorious voice and meaningful performance! Thank you for this discussion, and please consider elaborating.
